Tips on how to summarise:
- Read the full passage to make sure you know what the passage is going on about.
- Underlining key words or phrases.
- List all the key words/phrases.
- Write the key information in a few simple sentences which gathers all the information.
Example of summarising a newspaper article:
Key word selection:
- Tuesday branded “disloyal”
- Corbyn wore a mismatched suit
- top button on his shirt appeared to be undone.
- sked if Mr Cameron was surprised Mr Corbyn had not sung the anthem
- was "very rude and very disrespectful"
Summary of the article
The author of this article wants its readers to understand that Jeremy Corbyn is disloyal to his Queen and country and continues on explaining how Corbyn showed up to the remembrance ceremony with an unmatching suit and an unbuttoned shirt.
