Revision from Short Film Proposal

The mistakes I found on the first slide is punctuation. A comma and a full stop was missing. The first circle is where a comma should be and the second circle is where a full stop should be.

The first circle is where there is not an apostrophe for 'film's'. There is a spelling mistake and says 'subjec' instead of 'subject'. One more mistake in this slide for the word 'woman' is does not fit into the context of the sentence and should be 'women'.

Opening Lines of Presentation

Does anyone know how many women suffer with domestic abuse?

3 in 1 women are domestically abused in their lifetime.

Good Morning. My name is Kieran Falzon. I want to help raise awareness for people who are being domestically abused and show them that they can get out of the situation even if they think nothing can.

I am going to jump straight into it, I want to create a short film to do with domestic abuse so I can raise awareness, but will need a certain amount of money for this to happen but I will get into that later on in the presentation.

Linguistic Register

A linguistic register is a variety of a language used for a particular purpose or in a particular social setting. A linguistic register is useful when doing a proposal because when doing a document like this you need to use the correct language and punctuation to be able to do this successfully.

Inappropriate Linguistic Register

In the first scene of the film I'm gonna have a shot of a girl drinking a cuppa tea with bruises on her face and arms and a bottle of pills on the table in front of her and also a picture of the man she is with. This sequence will contribute to the whole film because it'll set what is going on in the character life and shows what is happening to her within the first shot of the film. The facts the audience can see from this scene is that she's being beaten which will give the area of representation which is abuse. The key representative image I want to capture is an upset girl who's been beaten, and to give the audience little hints to what is happening in the first scene.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What was wrong with the paragraph

The bad things that are said in this paragraph is mainly the punctuation, for example in this paragraph it says "cuppa" instead of 'cup of tea' which is too conversational. Another issue with this paragraph is that the person has written it as a list which is in the first sentenced highlighted the correct punctuation was not used such as commas, the writer used 'and' to break it up but it was not the correct connectives or punctuation to do so. The writer abbreviates words when it is meant to be a formal paragraph so they used the word "it'll" instead of it will. Finally the end of a sentence has not made sense because the writer has said "area of representation which is abuse", it is too vague for the reader because there is many different types of abuse.

Appropriate Linguistic Register

In the first scene of my short film I am going to have a shot of a girl drinking a cup of tea with bruises on her face and arms with a bottle of pills on the table in front of her and also a picture  of the man she is with. This sequence will contribute to the whole film because it will set what is going on in the characters life and shows what is happening to her within the first shot of the film. The facts the audience can gather from this scene is that the female character is being beaten which will give the area of representation, which is domestic abuse. The key representative imagery I want to capture is an upset girl who has been beaten, and to give the audience little hints to what is happening in the first scene.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is right about this paragraph

I feel like this paragraph is of very good quality, I think this because the correct punctuation is used and words are not abbreviated. All the words are used in the right context and I can not see anything wrong with this paragraph as it is very formal and is explaining the topic of domestic abuse clearly.

Nancy Duarte - Achieving a successful presentation

What makes a presentation boring/irritating

  • The person presenting was so boring.
  • He had no expression in his face or voice.
  • The topic he was talking about was boring.
  • He didn’t make sense of what to do when giving us a task.

 Ideas the class thought about:

  • Can’t see the screen – text, lighting, focus.
  • Know/doesn’t know material – by heart, rehearsals, walk through, confidence, style of expression, monotone.
  • Volume of info per slide, volume of information/slide
  • On topic/off topic
  • Make your presentation into a story
  • The audience you are presenting to are the hero you are helping.
  • Presentations have a shape?

Nancy Duarte about achieving a successful presentation

  • Tell the audience what is
  • What could be?
  • Structure (beginning, middle and end).
  • Don’t talk all the time.
  • Laughing, clapping
  • Enthusiasm
  • Create unforgettable moments
  • Finish/start with a Brainy quote
  • Key words repeat
  • Metaphors/visual words
  • Fundamental information that relates the audience together
  • Music of the presentation
  • Rhythm
  • Musical/poetic references
  • Likable hero
  • Encounters
  • Emerges transformed

Indexing

I searched th index for anything that is relevant with domestic abuse. I found physical abuse which links in with domestic abuse.

This is what I found on domestic abuse, this section explain what you should do if you are being domestically abused. This helped me on my research because it explains that you shouldn't keep it a secret and that you should tell someone you trust.

Handout Task

Combination Task
Identifying handouts
Reading a written source an extracting information
Obtaining information from a handout

This is a handout on domestic violence. On the handout I have highlighted important information and have also underlined and labelled the more relevant information and gave an explanation why I have underlined and labelled that information.

Tips on how to concentrate when reading

Read where friends, music, noise, etc. will not be distracting.
Read when you are alert.
Limit reading sessions to realistic amounts of time/pages.
Switch back and forth from reading to other study activities or tasks.

Turn chapter headings/subheadings into questions. Then search for answers.

Mark text information that answer the questions. Be an active reader.

Pause frequently to summarise/restate ideas. Use your own words.

Techniques for effective reading with concentration

1. Cut out the noise - Make sure you are in a quiet area where there are no distractions to stop you from concentrating on the book you are reading.

2. Structure your environment - Make sure you are not facing any potential distractions such a mobile phones. This can have an ability to focus.

3. Clarify objectives - Make sure your goal/objective is clear otherwise it will be very difficult to focus.

4. Set a deadline - Set a time you want to finish reading and have a break once you have reached your deadline.

5. Isolate yourself  - Isolating yourself is useful when you want to get some reading down because then you are clear of any distrations.

6. Healthy body, sharper mind - If you allow yourself to get enough sleep you will be able to focus more on the tasks ahead which will make it better quality, try to have a healthy diet because then you will be able to have higher levels of concentration when reading.

Evaluation on Annotation

Highlighting is useful when you want to make words visible in a text to catch your eye. This form of extracting information from a text is very useful because it clearly points out the key points in the text. I used this when annotating my extracts to make sure the information is clearly shown.

Underlining is useful when you want to pick out specific words and to take notes of those key words so you can understand what they are within the text. I used this in my annotations to show the reader what key words and phrases were important to me when reading the text.

Labelling is useful when you want to clearly show what you are annotating and give an explanation about what you have underlined or highlighted.  I did this when annotating and I think I did this effectively because I have labelled all the information I think is important in the piece of texts I annotated.

Journal Search

This journal is about how domestic abuse happens to females and why women really stay with their partner who is abusing them. This journal is useful for my presentation because it gives loads of reasons why women stay with their abusive partner, for example some women think they beat them out of love.

Darrell Payne et al, "Domestic violence and female victim: The real reason women stay!" Journal of mutlicultural, gender and minority studies (Volume 3, isuue 1, January 2009)

Research about Domestic Abuse

What is the definition of domestic violence?
The UK government’s definition of domestic violence is “any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to psychological, physical, sexual, financial, emotional.”
Facts and stats about domestic violence
Official statistics show the amount of domestic violence recorded by the authorities every year. But the problem is much bigger than shown in official statistics, as many victims and children don’t tell anyone about the abuse, and they are not recorded as crimes. That’s why SafeLives also uses data from our Insights database – the largest national database of domestic violence cases in the UK, with more than 35,000 records from 2009 to date.
Top ten facts about domestic abuse in England and Wales
  • Each year around 2.1m people suffer some form of domestic abuse -  1.4 million women (8.5% of the population) and 700,000 men (4.5% of the population)
  • Each year more than 100,000 people in the UK are at high and imminent risk of being murdered or seriously injured as a result of domestic abuse
  • Women are much more likely than men to be the victims of high risk or severe domestic abuse: 95% of those going to Marac or accessing an Idva service are women
  • In 2013-14 the police recorded 887,000 domestic abuse incidents in England and Wales
  • Seven women a month are killed by a current or former partner in England and Wales
  • 130,000 children live in homes where there is high-risk domestic abuse
  • 62% of children living with domestic abuse are directly harmed by the perpetrator of the abuse, in addition to the harm caused by witnessing the abuse of others
  • On average victims experience 50 incidents of domestic abuse before getting effective help
  • On average high-risk victims live with domestic abuse for 2.6 years before getting help
  • Most victims – 85% - see on average 5 professionals in the year before they finally get effective support

Annotation and Highlighting

Annotation is a technique used to extract information from written sources.

This involves reading through your research and:
  • Forming an understanding about what has been written.
  • Evaluating the accuracy of the information and/or data employed.
  • Making connections between pieces of research and editing your decision list for further research.
Sometimes it is helpful to:
  • Highlight certain sections of the information using a highlighter pen;
  • Label sections or elements using a line drawn from the text to the margin.
  • Make notes in the margin or on a separate piece of paper.
Annotation is about interacting with the text

Give an opinion in your annotations.

Locate important passages
  • A quote that is important?
  • An idea worth remembering?
Make connections
Inside the text: Does the text connect effectively?
Outside the text: Connect outside of the text so in your personal life?

Define new words
Look up new words you don't mean right the meanings in the margin.

Track themes
Note the themes whenever you notice one. Doing so will help you to understand the message the article is trying to convey.

What I want to look for:
  • Statistics on how many people are affected in the UK?
  • How many people are effected by domestic abuse each week?
  • What drives a person to abuse their partner?
  • Where is it more likely to happen?
  • 4.6 million women in England and Wales have experienced domestic abuse
  • One in seven children and young people under the age of 18 will have experienced living with domestic violence
  • In England and Wales two women on average are killed each week by their partner or ex-partner.
  • The most dangerous time for a woman is when she is trying to escape from her abuser.

Summarising

Summarising is a useful technique on shortening a long piece of text in words which you can understand.

Tips on how to summarise:

  • Read the full passage to make sure you know what the passage is going on about.
  • Underlining key words or phrases.
  • List all the key words/phrases.
  • Write the key information in a few simple sentences which gathers all the information.
Example of summarising a newspaper article:
Key word selection:

  1. Tuesday branded “disloyal”
  2. Corbyn wore a mismatched suit
  3. top button on his shirt appeared to be undone.
  4. sked if Mr Cameron was surprised Mr Corbyn had not sung the anthem
  5. was "very rude and very disrespectful"

Summary of the article

The author of this article wants its readers to understand that Jeremy Corbyn is disloyal to his Queen and country and continues on explaining how Corbyn showed up to the remembrance ceremony with an unmatching suit and an unbuttoned shirt.

Key Word Search

It is important to use a key word search because on Google you type in the subject you are looking for so I used "women domestic abuse" and it came up with books that have topics to do with domestic abuse in women.

Unique Selling Point

For my short film I have done some research and watched and evaluated 3 different short films to do with domestic violence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAp2vnVPERI

This short film is about a relationship and how the male character is out working which the female character is at home cooking dinner for when he comes home. The male character comes home and starts abusing his girlfriend/wife and in the end he starts physically beating her till she is knocked out and covered in bruises. Right at the end of this short film the female stays with the male character because she loves him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu3Fgf8y5d0

This short film is about how a male partner is very abusive to his girlfriend and the short film is shot as some sort of letter to what happened and while the girl is talking it is showing clips of them two and what the male character did. In the end of this short film it shows the female character shooting her partner and her running away. This is an extreme case but in the real world this could possibly happen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPvsWPfCSXc

This is about a woman who is in a very abusive relationship as the male character rapes her and beats her and her little sister. This video is very strong and sends a strong message about domestic abuse. In the end of this short film the woman and the little sister runs away as they can't keep getting abused from the male character.

Overall these 3 short films shows 3 different endings to why women either stay in an abusive relationship, or to kill or to run away, there are very limited options on what to do in situations like this. This is very good for a unique selling point but could be difficult to make a product to fit into the market but I have had personal experience on domestic abuse which could give me the advantage on making the short film.

Newspapers - Scanning

The areas of abuse I would be interested in researching are:

  • Domestic Abuse
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Emotional Abuse.
Domestic Abuse

“The thing that I did not know that was so revealing to me was that anywhere between 50% and 75% of domestic violence homicides happen at the point of separation or after [the victim] has already left [her abuser],” says Cynthia Hill, director of HBO’s Private Violence. (Kasperkevic, 2014 pg 1). date accessed 15/9/2015

I chose this quote from a newspaper article in The Guardian because I thought it was very useful information as it has statistics on about homicides on women being domestically abused which fits in which my area of study.

Sexual Abuse

(Travis, 2015, pg 1)

I have chosen this article about sexual abuse because it gives statistics about how child sexual abuse has increased in the past few years. This will benefit me for my research because it shows what a big problem child sexual abuse is and would appeal to a large audience.

Emotional Abuse

(Bailey, 2014, pg 1) Date accessed 15/9/2015

I have chosen this article because it gives a real life story of someone who was emotionally abused by their partner. This article is very important to my research because it is showing that anything can happen to anyone and in this article it says that 1 in 4 women are abused which is a very strong statistic.

Website Skim Reading

I was researching on the BBC website on how much it would cost and what would be required for budgeting.

Cast and Crew - you might not have to pay anyone, but make sure you clarify this early on. If you are not paying crew then it is customary to offer to cover their expenses. Note - funded films generally require the equity minimum pay for cast and particularly crew.
  • Travel – an unavoidable cost.
  • Catering – food is not to be underestimated, if you can feed your team well they will be much happier to work for you.
  • Location - it depends where you are shooting, but again make sure that this is thoroughly researched ahead of time.
  • Camera and Lights - see Filmmaking Guide: Equipment.
  • Stock - see Filmmaking Guide: Equipment.
  • Insurance - see Legal Guide: Insurance.
  • Post-production and Marketing - important areas, most first-time filmmakers do not budget adequately for these. See also our related filmmaking guides: Post-production & Editing,Press & Publicity Materials, Marketing Your Short.

Research on Abuse

Did some research of different types of abuse and used the technique of scanning, this is what I found:

1.       Gooogle “Neglect NSPCC”.
a.       Children’s needs –
Basic physical care: Warmth, shelter, adequate food and rest, grooming (hygiene) and protection from danger.

Affection: Which includes physical contact, holding, stroking, cuddling and kissing, comforting, admiration, delight, tenderness, patience, time, making allowances for annoying behaviour, and general companionship and approval.

Security: Continuity of care, the expectation of continuing in the stable family unit, a predictable environment, consistent patterns of care and daily routine, simple rules and consistent controls and a harmonious family group.

Stimulation an innate potential: By praise and encouragement; curiosity and exploratory behaviour. By developing skills though responsiveness to questions and to play, by promoting educational opportunities.

Guidance and control: To teach adequate social behaviour which includes discipline within the child's understanding and capacity and which requires patience and a model for the child to copy, for example in honesty and concern and kindness for others.

Responsibility: For small things at first such as self-care, tidying playthings or taking dishes to the kitchen and gradually elaborating the decision making that the child has to learn in order to function adequately, gaining experience through his/her mistakes as well as his/her stresses and receiving praise and encouragement to strive to do better.

Independence: To make his/her own decisions first about small things but increasingly about the various aspects of his/her own life within the confines of the family and society's codes. Parents use fine judgement in encouraging independence and in letting the child see and feel the outcome of his or her own capacity. Protection is needed, but over-protection is as bad as responsibility and independence too early.

b.      Kinds of neglect - Physical neglect
Failing to provide for a child’s basic needs such as food, clothing or shelter. Failing to adequately supervise a child,or provide for their safety.

Educational neglect
Failing to ensure a child receives an education.

Emotional neglect
Failing to meet a child’s needs for nurture and stimulation, perhaps by ignoring, humiliating, intimidating or isolating them. It’s often the most difficult to prove.

Medical neglect
Failing to provide appropriate health care, including dental care and refusal of care or ignoring medical recommendations.

2.       Google “Domestic violence the facts refuge”.
a.       Statistics relating to the likelihood of being a female victim of domestic violence in the UK: 2 women are killed every week in England and Wales by                                                                    a current or former partner (Office of National Statistics, 2015) – 1 woman killed every 3 days

1 in 4 women in England and Wales will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes and 8% will suffer domestic violence in any given year(Crime Survey of England and Wales, 2013/14)

Globally, 1 in 3 women will experience violence at the hands of a male partner (State of the World’s Fathers Report, MenCare, 2015)

b.      Statistics reading to the likelihood of being a young victim of domestic violence in the UK: 25% of children in the UK have been exposed to domestic abuse (Radford et al. NSPCC, 2011)

In 90% of domestic violence incidents in family households, children were in the same or the next room (Hughes, 1992)

62% of children in households where domestic violence is happening are also directly harmed.

3.       Google “statistical bulletin alcohol related deaths” and click on the National Statistics PDF like.
a.       The three Uk regions with the lowest average alcohol-related death rates for females (period 2004-2013): East of England, London, South West.

b.      The three UK regions with the highest average number of alcohol-related male deaths (period 2004-2013): North West,

Scanning in detail

Activity on Scanning

Activity 1 - Our objective for this activity was to scan the text to find the statistics.
http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/sep/09/mps-debate-cannabis-legalisation-petition-signatures
  • Petition reaches 200,00 signatures.
  • Gained over 430,000
  • 125,000 signatures in just 5 days.
Activity 2 - We had to find an article that has something to do with abuse and give our partner questions and for them to find the answers in the text. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-34191560

I got asked to look for answers to these questions:
1. What did Mary want to see change?
2. What was the date of the event?
3. When was the information going to be release?

The answers to these are:
1. More should be done to protect victims against domestic abuse.
2. September 11th 2014.
3. They should be released at the end of the year.

Unit 2 Communication Skills For Creative Media Production - Skimming and Scanning

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this unit a learner should:

1. Be able to extract information from written sources.
Written Sources: Books, journals, websites, magazines, newspapers, handouts.

Skimming is when you take a quick look at the text to get an idea of what it’s going to be about.

Scanning is when you scan the extract and pick out specific key words within the extract.

When skimming we might:

  • Read the title
  • Look at the introduction in the first paragraph
  • Read headings and subheadings
  • Notice pictures, graphics and charts
  • Notice words and phrases that are bold, print or italics
  • Read the last paragraph.
When we scanning we:
  • Look for something  in particular
  • Do not read every word
  • Move our eyes quickly through the lines of text to identify a word or phrase
  • Locate specific information.
2. Be able to create a report in a media production context.
3. Be able to pitch a media production proposal using appropriate technology.

Phrase Search - Magazine

I type in on Google my chosen area of abuse in the magazine section.

Monique Davis (June 2002) Vibe Magazine, date accessed 14/9/2014
This is an extract copied and pasted because it shows the significance of what some people think of domestic abuse. This article seems like its a complaint from someone to the magazine. It shows that vibe magazine clearly discriminate women and domestic abuse and this individual think it is demoralising.
